High-Energy Shock Waves for Arthritis

Osteoarthritis can be disruptive, frustrating, and demoralizing; but it does not have to be.  Its effects range from mild discomfort that is an annoyance to severe pain that keeps you from doing the things you love.  Medication and joint injections can provide some relief, but only short-term; and no one wants to get a joint replaced.  If you are searching for a way to decrease pain and increase function, OsteoWave is the treatment you have been looking for.

OsteoWave is our innovative, non-invasive treatment using High-Energy Shock Waves delivered directly into the arthritic joint with our FDA approved device.  While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, the OsteoWave treatment can significantly decrease pain and increase function, and may slow the progression of your osteoarthritis.  With OsteoWave, you don’t have to let arthritis pain get in your way.

OsteoWave decreases your pain and increases function by stimulating the body to heal the soft tissue around and within the joint via an inflammatory response triggered by the secretion of growth factors and stem cells, and vascular growth increasing blood flow to the joint.  Additionally, several studies have observed that it may reduce the progression of osteoarthritis by improving the subcondral bone just under the cartilage and reducing chondrocyte apoptosis.  Let OsteoWave get you back to doing the things you love.

Am I a candidate for OsteoWave?

  • Is the pain reducing your quality of life?
  • Have conservative treatments failed?
  • Are you interested in a non-invasive treatment?
  • Would you like to decrease pain and increase function?
  • Would you like to possibly slow the degeneration?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is High-Energy Shock Wave Therapy?

High-Energy Shock Wave Therapy(HeSWT), also known as Focused Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (F-ESWT), was born out of lithotripsy.  Lithotripsy is the use of high energy acoustic  waves to break apart kidney stones. Doctor’s noticed that after lithotripsy, soft tissue healed faster and bone density increased near the treatment site. Soon after, doctors starting using shock wave therapy on musculoskeletal issues with amazing results, even better than surgery.  Extracorporeal literally translates to “outside the body” which means our treatment is non-invasive; eliminating the risks, downtime, and costs associated with surgery.  The Sonex HeSWT device is fully FDA approved, having been proven to be both safe and effective.

What can I expect with the treatment?

OsteoWave is completely non-invasive so there is no lengthy recovery period, time off from work, or risk of complications that you would expect with invasive surgery.  Each treatment normally lasts 30-45 minutes.  First, you sit in our treatment chair and are positioned to ensure both proper contact of the treatment head and your comfort.  In order to minimize discomfort, a local anesthetic may then be administered around the knee. Then, ultrasound gel will be applied to your knee and placed against the treatment head.  Approximately 2000 High-Energy Shock Waves will then be delivered to your knee at a specific frequency and energy level via the fluid filled membrane of the treatment head. Your comfort is very important to us so we can adjust the power of the shock waves accordingly.  If you received an anesthetic you will need to wait for it to wear off and it is safe to walk, but other than that, you can leave as soon as the treatment is complete and have received our post-treatment instructions.

What can I expect during recovery?

OsteoWave essentially breaks apart bad tissue and stimulates the healing of the soft tissue around your arthritic knee. Because your body is healing naturally, healing will take place over days, weeks, and months. Most patients see a significant improvement almost immediately, with the highest rate of improvement over the first 30 days after a treatment but continuing for several months. While you are able to immediately return to routine activities, you will need to avoid high-impact activities with your knee for 30 days after each treatment and then ease back into those activities.  This is usually the most difficult part of the treatment as our clients feel better soon after treatment and sometimes push it too hard.  It took years for your knee to degenerate, so give it a little time to heal it right.

Is OsteoWave covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, HeSWT is not covered by insurance.  Sonex Therapy is strictly self-pay although you are able to utilize your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for your treatment.  Additionally, Sonex accepts and offers financing through the CareCredit medical credit card.
